Letters to My Daughters

Can we experience wonder and optimism in the face of fear and uncertainty? How might we find courage in the face of failure, injustice, or threat of harm? How do we foster and preserve reservoirs of goodness and decency in ourselves and each other? How do we tell people that we love them?

When Scott Ordway sought to explain a frightening and uncertain world to his young daughters, he sat down to write them five real letters. These became Letters to My Daughters, an immersive five-movement work for cello and piano. inviting us all to consider how we find the light in darkness.

Cio da terra

This project—featuring Brazilian-born pianist-composer Henrique Eisenmann—began in a small Brooklyn studio. There, Josh and Henrique improvised for hours, the recordings of which seeded a program showcasing Henrique's omnivorous musical world: transcriptions of Hermeto Pascoal, a tribute to choreographer Pina Bausch, recompositions of Chopin and Messiaen threaded with Malawian and West African grooves, and songs by Milton Nascimento, Pixinguinha, and Robert Schumann.

Henrique’s new Cello Sonata No. 2 unspools across continents, with movements drawing on the Baka tradition of the Ituri Forest, the Afro-Brazilian devotion of Iemanjá, and the spirit-possession dances of Tanzania—filtered through touches of Schubert and Shostakovich.
